The reason why anonymity on social media is toxic isn't so much that can't know who someone is, but that a single person can quickly turn themselves into a "crowd". On Reddit, there's not even an email verification step, so it's trivial to quickly create thousands of accounts.
This can be used to shill something and create the illusion of popularity, to spread rumors about someone, or create the illusion that dozens of people are haters of someone. And this can all be done by a single person in a few hours.
And that is really jus the tip of the ice berg
I’ve been saying for years that Twitter and the like should not allow anonymous posting. It enables too many bad things versus the restriction of some freedoms.

My kids nursery was once the subject of unfounded accusations by a parent who took to a local Facebook mums group to claim abuse of the children. Fortunately, as Facebook doesn’t allow anonymous posting, they found out her identity and sued for defamation.
It was a fabulous nursery and fortunately the community rallied around what was a harrowing experience for the owners. Comments were cheap and unfounded but she suffered the consequences. People should be liable for comments as though they’d taken out advert in the press.
