The reason why anonymity on social media is toxic isn't so much that can't know who someone is, but that a single person can quickly turn themselves into a "crowd". On Reddit, there's not even an email verification step, so it's trivial to quickly create thousands of accounts.

This can be used to shill something and create the illusion of popularity, to spread rumors about someone, or create the illusion that dozens of people are haters of someone. And this can all be done by a single person in a few hours.
