Compartmentalize risk and complexity: start a new side system. If it fails, at least it doesn't bring down the whole.

A single system shouldn't do too much, as that ties the viability & success of the whole to the viability & success of the additional features. Feature expansion means repeatedly taking on additional risk & complexity. Know when to say no.
