The Left in Germany and the US have strongly opposed nuclear power. In the US, this opposition has increased the economic costs (through challenges during the approval process). So economic and political costs aren't separable in US context

Probably one element to add to the calculus is that when you eliminate countries like Germany and Japan you eliminate a large portion of the tech development that would reduce prices.

Permanent nuclear waste material storage has never been solved in the US. No one wants it in their backyard. Nor do I believe that we know the cost short and long term of safely storing material with a 50,000 year half-life. 10x mans written record.
