I wonder if The Great Gatsby was inspired by Le Grand Meaulnes. It has the same larger-than-life romantic hero main character, the same "within and without" narrator, the same overall template, the same themes, and even the same title. Published 12 years later.
Le Grand Meaulnes is a good book, by the way; if you haven't read it, you should. In French, since no translation could do justice to la poésie de sa prose.
