Le Grand Meaulnes is a good book, by the way; if you haven't read it, you should. In French, since no translation could do justice to la poésie de sa prose.

I wonder if The Great Gatsby was inspired by Le Grand Meaulnes. It has the same larger-than-life romantic hero main character, the same "within and without" narrator, the same overall template, the same themes, and even the same title. Published 12 years later.

Been thinking bout retellings, how forgotten books of yesterday become bestsellers once again, or old stories reworked to be appealing to the current generation.
