A big reason why research labs that hype up general AI progress are irresponsible: their talking points end up shaping the worldview of decision-makers -- in insane wayshttps://twitter.com/MelMitchell1/status/1362221666386866177 …

AI experts, what do you propose that we do about insane statements like this from US defense officials? (From the @washingtonpost's article about autonomous "AI" weapons. https://www.washingtonpost.com/magazine/2021/02/17/pentagon-funds-killer-robots-but-ethics-are-under-debate/ … ) pic.twitter.com/v9m9R3dEGn

Call representatives and senators...we need committees on AI governance. I was very encouraged to find an executive committee summary from FDA end of last year. Seems like that agency is not totally clueless like other parts of gov.

We need a government agency to regulate AI. After 10 months human eventually found a vaccine for covid19. I don't see any feasible remedies for evil GAI.

A new AI winter would create space and peace for sober research and a paradigm shift The sooner the better Therefore, most kinds of insanity are counterintuitively good 🎉❄️https://twitter.com/trylks/status/1360310979771400194 …

Which is not bad either! Honestly, a winter may be even be necessary, to cool down, relax, stop all the buzz and noise around deep learning and find a paradigm shift that takes AI higher peaks The natural cycle of life https://twitter.com/trylks/status/1354598369369485322 …

Show them how AI reacts to adversarial examples and explain how they have a decent probability of nuking themselves. If they still choose to proceed, prepare an email of “I told u so” and send them when shit happens.

they may also do it because the current research funding environment encourages hyperbole. not enough research funding for AI ethics and too much for “can we use deep learning to do X?” ... just my opinion FWIW.
