If you're building a product... talking to your users and using the product yourself are two of the most effective uses of your time. Executing in the right direction is more important than execution speed.

Strongly agree! Also, talking to users who have duct taped your products in crazy ways - your most _serious_ users - is usually most informative.

We create quite a bit of enterprisey software for businesses. One wall we hit more than we should is that we have to convince "stakeholders" that we (UXers, devs) need to spend time talking with real end-users about their day-to-day jobs. Seriously.

and another thing... Once the software is released (remember, it's custom - it's not a product) it can often go for years without further investment. "Ughh - that UI looks so dated". Of course it does. It was designed 7 years ago! Hasn't had as much as a refresh since.
