You develop interesting ideas not by being clever, but by thinking about things for a very long time, with obsessive intensity -- by following every trail of thought, opening door after door, and not stopping until you reach a conclusion.

A eureka moment is merely the crystallization of a very long log of accumulated thoughts.

Very true. And even better when your thinking in one area is cross-pollinated by ideas from a seemingly unrelated domain.

It's a great little thread. How many of you have had a eureka moment? Look it up before answering. They are by nature rare. It is a surprising state of being where everything becomes clear. Poincare' had one after having given up on a problem for a year.

and then the idea doesn't feel so interesting to you because you've spent months, years in the idea's territory. You know the land, and you forget that nobody else does.

Edison wants to weigh in here: discovery is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Or was it Bell? Either way, it’s the idea.
