What makes cities attractive is the lifestyle more than the jobs. Even assuming a lasting and extensive move to remote work (which would be a great thing), cities will bounce back when the pandemic is over.

If anything, remote work makes cities more attractive, because of the disappearance of the workplace as the main point of socialization

You can live in the area you enjoy and not worry about the commute.

Disagree. Remote work makes remote towns and villages more attractive, because people are freed from their desks in corporate offices that cluster around large cities. They need not deal with the traffic, pollution, crowds and chaos.

Us introverts can hide in cities but not so in country towns

Walkable cities with good restaurants/beautiful scenery but no big corps offices might get a boost.

Proximity at the cost of pollution, overpriced housing, high crime rates, and overpopulation. No suprise thousands of New Yorkers move South.

Remote work may not be that productive comparing to traditional office ways in some cases. It's a really good point that the city plays a very important role in socialise lifestyle.

Agreed that people don't want to commute, and they do want walkable but low-key places to relax in. That could be a town or village, or medium-density urban neighborhood. Not a central business district, not an office park.

And fast deliveroo delivery from a range of eateries, easy access to a range of niche hobbies groups, well-funded civic events, etc. All the usual benefits of having more people nearby.
