What I wonder, though, is if less demand for a 'financial centre' changes the relationship between a city's "core" and it's "edges". If you don't have to commute downtown, perhaps an emphasis on being close to downtown becomes less significant than a neighborhood's character.

My first job was a 1.5 hr commute one-way from Chicago. But as a 23 year old recent grad, you can sure as hell bet I wasn't moving up there.

Yes BUT there is absolutely no reason for cities in the US to be as dense, overcrowded and expensive as NYC or SF if people don't need to move there for work.
