Seriously, a couple decades ago I spent years building things that take a few weeks to piece together now. It was interesting to be working back then when there wasn't much competition, but the new productivity explosion in ML and software engineering is by far more exciting.

Not only is this very true, but the corollary is that the same engineer can achieve vastly more (or less) depending on his work env. I always laugh when people doubt the existence of 10x engineers — at my most productive career point I easily 10xed my least productive self.

Great point, I have the same experience 0x engineers exist, 100x probably too I have spent long time building software just to see it go to the trash before going to production. No matter how fast, good,… the solutions for the wrong problems are. Managers are not strategists…

Nowadays, you can outrun many of the old players. There are open-source tools that make your life easier. From UI to AI. All it needs is dedication which is the hard part.
