How do we know we're treating a dog well or poorly? By the fact it seems happy, or stressed/anxious? If so, what do we make of the fact that most humans are coerced into stressful and anxiety-laden lives?
Maybe it's more acceptable because humans are supposed to have more agency over their circumstances, compared to dogs?
IMO it’s rather easier to know what a dog wants and needs that to know whether to define that with words like ‘love’.
Re “treating poorly” - I was not referring to dogs particularly. Rather to other animals we dismiss as not having “soul” and thus are considered more ephemeral than us. Even though tests reveal remarkable attributes that should give pause to our treatment of them.
