IMO it’s rather easier to know what a dog wants and needs that to know whether to define that with words like ‘love’.

Re “treating poorly” - I was not referring to dogs particularly. Rather to other animals we dismiss as not having “soul” and thus are considered more ephemeral than us. Even though tests reveal remarkable attributes that should give pause to our treatment of them.
