If you were trying to assess that a matter teleportation occured by asking an audience of witnesses about it, you'd be encouraging the development of prestidigitation tricks, not research in physics. This is the same. The Turing test encourages deception, not progress.
Bots that "pass the Turing test" are to AI research what a David Copperfield show in Vegas is to physics research. (And yes, his shows do involve some amount of physics and engineering.)
isn't it rather that the Turing test / deception is quite good to measure advances on genuine human like intelligence, and failing on that front, ditching it towards mechanical tests is moving the goalpost towards industry metrics

To what extent does a Xerox machine need to be intelligent? It makes exact copies of paper copies, but is loaded with extra features: enlarge, print upside down, and so on. We don't think of it as being intelligent.
So the main focus of a Xerox machine is "transmission" of the original, with deliberate noise added. Our urgent question needs to be: "is there a transmission expert in the room?" Fortunately there is, and his theories can be applied to autofocus in medical pic.s, adding.....
...clarity to RADAR echoes, and viewing text databases + user need as producing data bases as "echoes" from the database. The transmission expert is Claude E Shannon, whose "entropy minimization" has been show to be crucial to many areas of language....

John McCarthy once remarked that if geneticists treated fruit flies like AI folks treated chess, we'd have a lot of very fast fruit flies, but not much knowledge of genetics.
The "real" turing test is the ultimate test because once passed it will mean that machines will be indistinguishable from humans. It is a test that requires all of human cognition. It is not a 30 minute test like a Copperfield show but a permanent test that is spread over time.
