A large fraction of our lives consists of rituals, mindless patterns, superficial appearances, make-believe. I used to think they were unnecessary. I am now increasingly seeing why we can't do away with any of them.

There is no specific meaning to life. We just exist. But the example you give is more about the creation of order Vs choice. We create appearances n rituals for various reasons. These give us a sense of belonging to group when we need it. For thinkers it is always a fight.
