It's always surprising to me when I watch a movie that turns out to be completely empty. If I spent two years and $300M making a movie, knowing millions of people would watch it, I'd want it to say something. To mean something.https://twitter.com/benedictevans/status/1343267975613308930 …

It says something about the state of Hollywood that Pixar is now the place people go to for movies for grownups.

The first rule of art is to convey something true -- true in the sense that it will resonate with your audience. It's not just fireworks.

As Andy Warhol demonstrated 50 years ago, if you have nothing to say in a movie you can say it cheap and wrap in a matter of days

If you are spending 300 million on making a movie, you are probably using it to digitally blow up stuff and regurgitating overused story telling bits to stitch it together. It helps to have actors with 'charisma' to sell it - which is the most important thing.

It is meant to have people escape reality. Hollow entertainment.

Unfortunately this is the case for 99% of movies these days, the goal is to keep you until the end, then you just realize it had nothing to say, not even a simple idea. The movie "I'm thinking of ending things" was in the remaining 1% for me, a master piece, highly recommended.

$300 Million movie are completely full of propaganda. Movies that will be watched by millions ARE (selling) PRODUCTS. Not a single second is empty (or unplanned). If you felt "this is empty" rewatch it and think again. Truly empty spaces lie inside movies that aren't products.

I’m pretty sure the point of most of these movies is precisely that - to say nothing while making a huge spectacle of the occasion. Or to pass on messaging that reinforces whatever trends are already out there.
