I sometimes encounter the take "modern society has made us soft", which makes no sense to me. The modern world presents immense complexity & challenges compared to past environments. Growth doesn't come from suffering or discomfort per se, it comes from surmountable challenges.

The aggregated suffering is in the minds of people; people who have no business in being inside their head. Higher time preferences, promoted by the abundancy of credits and goods, incentivize reaping when the getting is good; indulging at the cost of a meaningful future.
