I sometimes encounter the take "modern society has made us soft", which makes no sense to me. The modern world presents immense complexity & challenges compared to past environments. Growth doesn't come from suffering or discomfort per se, it comes from surmountable challenges.

The existence of surmountable challenges is not enough Francois. People still have to be encouraged or forced to overcome them, which is the missing ingredient in modern society.

Soft as in feminine. True masculinity is frowned upon today. It's been a long time, especially in countries like Sweden, since your body had the need to code for proteins relating to war, hunger, hostility, etc. Strong men => Prosperity => Feminism taking over the institutions.

I think it’s dual forces. On the one hand it’s easy to get by without knowing a lot of things. On the other, to fully function one needs to comprehend a staggering amount. It’s unsurprising educational differences lead to even more uneven outcomes.
