The Vikings caused most of Northwestern Europe to retreat inland and away from rivers for two centuries. The Barbary Pirates enslaved over one million people and caused the abandonment of hundreds of coastal villages in Spain and Italy.

The legacy of the Vikings is much clearer and less disputed. Their fearsome reputation and warlike ways led them to become Varangian guards in Byzantium, while the Franks ceded Normandy and the Slavs saw them become their Rus rulers in Kiev.

Japanese pirates caused China to abandon its formerly vast ocean-going ventures in the mid 15th century and for some time thereafter (and even to depopulate many coastal areas as with these other examples).
