When interacting with people from different companies, it strikes me how much company culture shapes people & filters for certain profiles. Companies are the sum of their employees, and employee behavior is the product of the company's culture. Which propagates from the top down.
I think it's not an exaggeration to say that everything a company does is a distant echo of the values and the moral character of its founders and the various executives it saw over time. And this is just as true for great companies as it is for malfeasant ones.
Add to this: the campuses also ends up reflecting the founders. Google feels like university, with its pleasant walking paths. Facebook feels like a college dorm, with graffiti and dorm furniture. Apple’s “spaceship” is signature Steve Jobs aesthetic. Etc.
A company's culture is a reflection of the character depth of its leadership. Uber killed a pedestrian, because its engineering team thought it was ok to cheat to win ... a reflection of Uber's leader mindset. They are now out of the self driving car business, a $1T market loss.
Then again Uber was founded on a business model that included bribing local elected officials to undo market protections, so it could hire people without contracts, insurance or any other kind of benefits. Again a reflection of the company's leadership character depth ...
