The choice was between this guy or the other guy, and slightly less than half of all voters went for the other guy. How do you even begin to fix that

One of the biggest issues this cycle was how fast viral misinformation could spread. Need to figure out how to reduce the R factor of blatantly false info.

This is a good take. Need to overhaul the entire social media ecosystem to achieve better information hygiene. Make the user be in control of how they consume information, instead of being puppets in the hands of algorithms designed to maximize "engagement" (=radicalization)

This is actually something that WeChat in China (for good or bad) was reasonably well designed for. I believe it can offer some interesting insights.

But, of course, it’s a tricky balance to maintain between access and engagement.

I wrote a bit about this recently. TL;DR would be: I don’t think we fully-appreciate the costs of mono-cropping information flow architectures.https://generativist.substack.com/p/dunbars-number-is-quadratic …

Overall I agree, but at this point I have serious doubts that, assuming an alternative existed to current social media allowing greater control from its users, the people currently most affected by clickbaity news would chose that alternative instead of the current option.

I too think it's to easy to blame the messenger. Yes, the medium needs constant improvement, but educate people should be the primary objective. Thinking that social media only is responsible for this is a tad patronizing. People can learn to think with their head.

I strongly disagree. Yes, social media is a huge problem, but here is my point: you had a lying fascist as president for 4 years. Everyone knew that even without fake news. Just listen to his speeches. Still ~50% voted for him. You have to face the fact that they are ok with him.

I always hear: oh, poor misinformed and misguided people. They KNEW who he is and what he stands for AND they voted for him AGAIN. The divide of your population began way before social media.https://twitter.com/simongerman600/status/1321738809382416385 …
