Plenty of ballots left to count (and remember, things will get bluer over time as mail-in ballots get tallied). But I hoped we'd see a clear winner tonight, and the fact that it's looking unlikely is disappointing beyond wordshttps://twitter.com/leahmcelrath/status/1323831510420643840 …

We won’t know the results of the election tonight, but we do know one thing: We hoped for a complete and overwhelming repudiation of this monster and everything he stands for—and that does not appear to be happening. And it’s fucking heartbreaking.

Time and time again, I keep believing in everything good about America, and America keeps breaking my heart. Like in 2016, I'm taken by surprise. I am fundamentally unable to foresee these things, because it would mean having such a low view of America.

It's like if your best friend turns out to be a murderer. You couldn't foresee it -- you wouldn't have been their friend if you could. I just can't come to terms with the awfulness. So I just keep getting my heart broken with every news

Another thing that keeps surprising me after 11 years on Twitter is the awfulness of the replies. I always want to believe that it's because aggressive, bitter assholes are far more likely to reply than regular folks -- since the alternative is that we're surrounded by assholes

So many people have a poor education and are left out of the growing parts of the economy. They would rather destroy the last couple decades of growth than see others prosper while they get poorer. Democrats mostly deplore these people, and yes they are racist.

Coming out of the woodwork to say I respect you and your work so much it usually doesn’t occur to me to reply to you. Guessing a lot of silent followers feel the same way. I appreciate your measured wisdom tonight, too.

I hope you don't count counter-arguments as "awful" replies. If someone has counter-arguments and doesn't resort to bullying/hateful messages, it shouldn't be counted as an "awful" message.

Agreement isn't usually a strong motivator to chip in, whereas disagreement - "someone is wrong on the Internet" - is, much more so. Takes you agree with, you glide right past. But if someone has a wrong take, it's just irritating. You need to fix them!
