Time and time again, I keep believing in everything good about America, and America keeps breaking my heart. Like in 2016, I'm taken by surprise. I am fundamentally unable to foresee these things, because it would mean having such a low view of America.
It's like if your best friend turns out to be a murderer. You couldn't foresee it -- you wouldn't have been their friend if you could. I just can't come to terms with the awfulness. So I just keep getting my heart broken with every news
Another thing that keeps surprising me after 11 years on Twitter is the awfulness of the replies. I always want to believe that it's because aggressive, bitter assholes are far more likely to reply than regular folks -- since the alternative is that we're surrounded by assholes

I don't understand how smart people get disappointed at the voters rather than getting disappointed that their worldview doesn't match reality.
It maybe due to the fact that the environment they live in, is not a good representation for the rest of the country. If we leave our workspaces and go into the depths of the country, maybe then we will find out the real nature of any country. Not just USA.
This. So much this. Voters read misinfo and disinfo on Facebook all the time and actually believe it. I have been combatting this for years in my own family and I’ve basically only succeeded in making them stop sharing for fear I’ll yell. They still read it and believe it.
I'm not saying that @realDonaldTrump will win, but the Biden landslide predicted by @CNN & @nytimes is nowhere to be seen. Constantly blaming all problems of the society on systemic oppression doesn't help; people need to take up responsibility, work hard, & get through barriers.
