Not really. I mean my friends are pretty much the same people they were decades ago. The internet makes people you never met seem much closer than reality. Most people are not racist and horrible. But the minority position is amplified 100 fold.

I'm thinking it more stems from concentration of power. Human rights violations? Corruption+concentration of power allows those who wield it to act with impunity, even to deflecting attention away from root issues Xenophobia IMO, largely result of confabulation by the powerless

Though unfortunate with what transpires, it's quite interesting to see how transparent people (and to some extent groups/ modern day cultural "tribes") become through their reactions to these cases. Almost like a litmus test we never asked for.
