A thing somebody told me some years ago, which I thought was poetic. The brain -- that recursive self-observation loop -- does not produce consciousness, per se. Rather, it catches it, not unlike a radio antenna catches a broadcast. In that sense, all consciousnesses are alike.

I remember hearing this view and thinking that this sounded very Eastern; closer to Indian views. Looking it up led to a philosopher, Robert Forman, who unsurprisingly spent a great deal of time studying eastern mysticism.
