A thing somebody told me some years ago, which I thought was poetic. The brain -- that recursive self-observation loop -- does not produce consciousness, per se. Rather, it catches it, not unlike a radio antenna catches a broadcast. In that sense, all consciousnesses are alike.
There is one consciousness singleton, and the self-observing information processing machinery of our brains act as a receiver for it. I consider the Hard Problem to be beyond our reach at this time, so I don't have any judgment on whether this might be an acceptable possibility.
I remember hearing this view and thinking that this sounded very Eastern; closer to Indian views. Looking it up led to a philosopher, Robert Forman, who unsurprisingly spent a great deal of time studying eastern mysticism.
