I don't mind electronic gadgets, but I draw the line at connected ones. Those tend to have more power over you than you have over them

I don't mind newsfeeds, and I don't mind recommender systems, but I draw the line at algorithmic newsfeeds. When I want to see content recommended based on my past consumption, I'll ask for it. I don't need it pushed to me every time I open an app

I don't mind video games, but I draw the line at games with in-app purchases. Those have design incentives that inevitably point towards A/B optimized addictiveness

          A/B? Surely it's a multi-arm bandit!

I feel like not all IAPs are equal though. Plenty of awesome indie games where IAPs only unlock DLC, e.g. enjoying Polytopia a lot. Sad that there is no separate category for this in stores.

It works OK, if you vow never to actually buy anything and to stop if grinding is not fun any more.

This is why I told my 9 years old daughter she is not going to get a Nintendo gamepad. In her class, a group of girls have have "announced" they will only play with kids, who have a Nintendo gamepad with premium apps ... this is a middle class area. Welcome to Japan.

Not a big gamer but I bought a DS for this reason! Rather pay for game than have them manipulate me into either spending too much money or quit it + feel unsatisfied. Not sure how many others feel like me but the mobile game industry sabotaged themselves by being too aggressive.

Usually, you knew how much a game would cost. Nowadays, with in-app micropayments, the price of a full game may be in the thousands But people pay, because they don't see the pricetag. Hopefully people will learn and this will stop. Currently it is a moral hazard
