The thing with rapid disintegration is that once it begins, it is very difficult to slow down, much less reverse. The shattered glass shards won't reassemble themselves into a nice window pane.

Trump's appeal was, yes, racism, but also the perception of his business acumen + his econ. populism. The former was pure fiction, the latter simply lies. I think a lot of older, white voters (his base) elected a very different person than what they got. Classic bait and switch.

This type of arrogance (sorry) is what helped him get elected. The people who think he is a clown probably didn't vote for him. But a significant chunk of the population voted for him and is happy with his performance. They still say, this is upbeat family-friendly entertainment.
