A leader who tells the truth can use the trust vested in them to lead the way out. You can't follow someone you can't trust.

The way to avoid panic in a crisis is to tell the truth. Hiding information and lying, even if done to avoid panic, just creates more chaos and anxiety. And it leaves people without a trusted figure to follow.

I don't know that this is true. I personally don't support misinformation about Trump's status. But fear can be viral; eg a startup running out of money, causing loss of morale, which decreases velocity, which shortens runway further. I think you'll find leaders project a lot.

I guess the real way to avoid panic in a crisis is to have the capability of seperation between the sources telling the truth and pretending to tell the truth. But, who/what warrants the truth is "real truth"?
