One of my favorite evolution facts: crab morphology is an attractor point of the crustacean evolution manifold. Various crustacean species independently tend to become crab-like over time. It's called carcinisation 🦀🦀🦀 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcinisation …pic.twitter.com/TFkev5mWcD

The Wikipedia page really needs pictures of what the ancestors looked like so you can get a sense of convergence from different starting points. Otherwise the images just look like small variations that might have descended from a single crab species.

This may be the craziest story of 2020: 1 - horseshoe crabs have blue blood 2 - blue blood is a key ingredient for COVID vaccines 3 - pharma pays $60k per gallon of blue blood and collects half a million crabs, bleeds them, and returns them to the ocean https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/2020/07/covid-vaccine-needs-horseshoe-crab-blood/ …

Is it that the genetic coding of crustaceans and easily evolved variability implicitly defines crabs as an attractor point, or the ecological niches occupied by crustaceans favours crab-like forms? Would be interesting if there's a non-crustacean that ended up with the same form.
