This is a strange take -- in virtually every country the center-left has been pro-lockdown and the far-right has been anti-lockdowns (the center-right is usually pro-lockdowns as well, but not as much as the center-left). If it were stochastic there would be many exceptions.https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1308132246210084870 …

It doesn't seem completely far-fetched to imagine a world where Trump was for lockdowns and Democrats were against them. In that world, you'd probably see more of this kind of thing, i.e. an argument from the left that lockdowns perpetuate inequality. https://www.jacobinmag.com/2020/09/covid-19-pandemic-economy-us-response-inequality …

In general, it's helpful to look at the rest of the world to understand the US, since it highlights what's unique about the US and what's just a manifestation of broader trends and general equilibria.

I think the dynamic at play here is: "trust in expert + value human life -> pro-lockdown" "anti-intellectualism and anti-expertise + value 'individual freedom' over human life -> anti-lockdown"

The take "it will only kill the elderly so it's fine, we don't need to do anything" is also not unique to the US, it's a far-right message found throughout the world.

How about this dynamic - so many of those in favor of the lockdown are not negatively impacted by it (fwiw I am not negatively impacted by it either, but still oppose it on principle). You have no moral high ground. https://twitter.com/19_phd/status/1306309107956228097?s=20 …

Yes, exactly. The mental health & economic costs of lockdown are absolutely staggering. Excess suicides & overdoses vs. 2019 exceed deaths attributed to the virus, nevermind the economic devistation. The correct strategy is to quarantine at-risk & carriers, not the healthy.

Let's be honest, the experts torched their credibility with the whole "you must social distance unless you are at a Floyd protest" business, while condemning the anti-social distancing/mask protests that we're also largely outdoors.

No expert said the protests were risk free. You're just making up statements. And, as has been shown by professional cycling, a massive group of men all exercising outside in close proximity, the risk of infection out doors is much much lower especially so with masks.

I am all for real experts e.g. Didier Raoult and value human life as much as you do, but the difference between you and me is that I see the broader picture and get that draconian measures will make more harm for human well-being (health being only one d) than the virus itself.

If the expert is Neil Ferguson I am definitely on the other side. If the expert is @SunetraGupta or @MartinKulldorff I appreciate their expertise and the soundness of their approach. Pr Tegnell managed outstanding results in Sweden. Merely chance?
