This is a strange take -- in virtually every country the center-left has been pro-lockdown and the far-right has been anti-lockdowns (the center-right is usually pro-lockdowns as well, but not as much as the center-left). If it were stochastic there would be many exceptions.https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1308132246210084870 …

It doesn't seem completely far-fetched to imagine a world where Trump was for lockdowns and Democrats were against them. In that world, you'd probably see more of this kind of thing, i.e. an argument from the left that lockdowns perpetuate inequality. https://www.jacobinmag.com/2020/09/covid-19-pandemic-economy-us-response-inequality …

In general, it's helpful to look at the rest of the world to understand the US, since it highlights what's unique about the US and what's just a manifestation of broader trends and general equilibria.

I think the dynamic at play here is: "trust in expert + value human life -> pro-lockdown" "anti-intellectualism and anti-expertise + value 'individual freedom' over human life -> anti-lockdown"

The take "it will only kill the elderly so it's fine, we don't need to do anything" is also not unique to the US, it's a far-right message found throughout the world.

I think that it may be less altruistic than you think of the left--most tech workers, etc in that category continue to get $ while being at home. Meanwhile many blue collar jobs have been eliminated, small towns reliant on tourism (like mine) have been devastated w no benefits.

My town seems center right (lots of Trump flags, bumper stickers). I moved here for hotel job in April but hotel closed at end of March, did not reopen fully, current employees receive benefits but those like me who were due to start are living off savings, or are destitute.

I had found the divide interesting myself in reading various tweets over the last few months but though I what you say about independence has some bearing, I also think relative comfort versus losing everything and having to live in your car plays a role too.

India 🇮🇳 lockdown was supported by the right wing Hindu government.

in the Netherlands, the far-right parties were calling for a full lockdown and my left-leaning bubble there still questions whether facemasks work. It's weird.
