My wife made calls for Democrats today, and one conversation was w/ another black woman who went full queue-anonymous on her, citing horrors of Biden that were “all over Facebook”, then cursed her out for supporting Biden b/c of it. There is much diversity of belief out there...

Facebook has been doing so much damage to our society. This country would look very different today if that company weren't led by profoundly unethical people.

It's absolutely fascinating/frightening how the right wing was able to weaponize FB in a matter of what seems like minutes if not seconds, and how FB realized this was a sustainable, monetizable audience they could cultivate for financial enrichment.

It’s deeply, deeply frustrating and worrying. I deleted my FB account three years ago, and haven’t regretted doing so one bit.

As opposed to Google? Even if we ignore Youtube, the search engine displays deeply problematic behaviors, particularly across gendered and racialised lines. There's good work being done at Google, but the bottom line still rules supreme - even in spite of human costs.

It is indeed a constant process of iteration and improvements. If you have specific examples, I’m happy to consider them and suggest them for fixing (I do this myself). And people are working passionately on research to address problems at a broader level.

Equally guilty is @twitter (the 280 character limit is a crafty feature which encourages slandering instead of constructive discussions), and, to some extent, customized political/social news feeds from companies like @Google, which limit the exposure to opposing viewpoints.

I think FB has more impact on collective action broadly across the world’s population, so bubbles there (eg in FB groups) have disproportionate impact compared to Twitter and personal news feeds. All tech companies can do better, of course.

Funny, I thought you were talking about Uber and Twitter ... but Facebook is probably worse. Then again, they are only symptoms, not the cause.

One thing that I think will come to bit them on their you know what is the way they’re allowing fraudulent ads posing as legitimate well known companies. My wife fell for one the other day but luckily she used a card that has fraud protection.
