I got into the habit of using 2 U-locks, one for the frame and one for the front wheel. In this setup it's the back wheel, saddle, etc. that get taken. Or sometimes they just cut the U-locks (which is no easy task)

Strangely enough, I feel it happened a lot more in France than here (in New York suburbs). I used to leave our bikes without lockers in the garage of our apartment building in NYC
