It'd satisfy e = m c^2 and c is huge. All solar output striking the earth over 1 second is worth about 2kg. Just fyi the sun burns 4 teragrams per second.

This would probably take more energy than you think. My napkin math suggests global yearly energy production could produce roughly 1000 kg. Good foundation to start scaling up though. Probably start with more efficient energy producing technology and let exponential growth run.

This idea can be found in “The Ice People” by Barjavel. For example there is a small machine that can print arbitrary food from energy alone.

the problem being we are running out of energy -- I would love to have such technology but I am unsure it would solve our most pressing issues. Interstellar travel or supra conductors seems more a sure bet?
