The end of a civilization is not a one-day event, but a process spanning a couple centuries... slow at first, then increasingly fast.

I can recommend the podcast Fall of Civilizations @Fall_of_Civ_Pod. Each episode is a long and beautiful description of the fall of a civilization. Easter island, Vikings' Greenland, Mayan empire,... And it's tastefully narrated, wonderful work.

To prevent TOTAL elimination due to the fast and overwhelming cascading failure of the system, triggering small and manageable cascades despite losses in overall stability. The question is, what part of the "progression" are we in? Can we compute the next explosive percolation?
