Don't have to go that far back. My mother was an illiterate immigrant yet raised 3 sons who all went on to have a measure of success.
Today I learned that one of my great-great grandfathers couldn't read or write -- or even sign his own name. Born 1829 or 1830. We take universal education for granted, but just a few generations ago, only a small fraction of humanity could read

Oh well, my grandmother can't write and she was born here in Spain. We should be grateful and fight for our rights at all times.

Illiteracy is a reality for many in Africa today. However, many have amazing skills with their hands or problem solving for their immediate communities; finding connections, using experience, and applying themselves in a way "qualified" people could not. The mind is fascinating
