How much of Covid denialism is about refusing to lose face after having been wrong for so long? Better retreat to conspiracy theories than admit that your heroes lied to you and that you believed it

Its not just the individual that won’t cover the face but more significant are the social bonds, signaled. In other words, it’s hard enough to change your mind. But if you have to disappoint / betray your tribe, that’s a big leap.

Also, tribal identity. It wouldn't be as embarrassing to do the right, safe thing -- but what if your friends see you?

I think this "refusing to lose face" is a universal phenomenon for secondary stances. What we all should do is to give people at this stage an out; we all lose by pushing them further into their corner.

That's a good insight. Once a person embraces nonsense they stand to lose face and status if they admit by their actions they were wrong.

Usually seen as a manifestation of cognitive dissonance. I like to think of it as metaphorical Anton-Babinski:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton%E2%80%93Babinski_syndrome …
