The thesis that it is more efficient to focus solely on our core competency and outsource the rest overlooks the immense value there is in being familiar with a wide range of domains. Hyper-specialization is the death of creativity This applies to individuals, teams, and nations

It may be less efficient to do some things in-house, but you make up for it via the long-term intangible benefits of a holistic culture

With the rise of AI in the next hundred years, creativity and culture will be your only real assets. Everything else will be commoditized via automation

And I keep seen this more and more in the ML and DL community, people trying to do, e.g., text understanding by just throwing more and more layers and not even looking at years of accumulated knowledge in other fields.

And even if more layers is ultimately the right solution, simply ignoring another whole field of research is a disadvantage, if only to know what other things have failed before and not repeat the same underlying mistakes when coming from a different angle.

Historically wrong : Huguenots, Jews and even more take a closer look at the evolution of the S&P 500. I think your original meaning was that in order to show the superiority and profoundness of certain methodology one need to demonstrate its added value at number of fields

Compression/smbolism is talked about a lot but I think that expansion is undervalued: understanding gains breadth (and possibly depth too) by having access to a broader base and gets closer to approaching a more complete sense of perceived truth.

Is hyperspecialization the death of creativity if you open yourself up to inspiration from the arts, other industries, areas of study, etc.. to apply to that specialization?
