The way forward in AI is to focus on understanding, as opposed to mimicry. If you want to understand the nature of life, you'd look at autopoiesis, molecular biology, DNA. If you wanted to mimic life, you'd be drawing cartoons. Big difference. Lots of "AI" is a neural cartoon.
AI that *understands* will not behave in way that looks intelligent at first. But it will scale to that level -- to our level. A cartoon will superficially look like the real thing, but with none of the substance that actually matters.

What does a baby see when it looks you in the eye? What does a baby hear when you repeat their vocalizations back to them? I doubt DNA will tell you that, and I'm not sure autopoiesis will go much further than accounting for the baby being able to see or hear.
It's the science of cognition and language that needs to be revisited.

There might be a way to put together mimicry to form something indistinguishable from understanding.
That might work at time t then degrade going forward, as the mimicry gets out of sync with the dynamics of the world.
