AI that *understands* will not behave in way that looks intelligent at first. But it will scale to that level -- to our level. A cartoon will superficially look like the real thing, but with none of the substance that actually matters.

What does a baby see when it looks you in the eye? What does a baby hear when you repeat their vocalizations back to them? I doubt DNA will tell you that, and I'm not sure autopoiesis will go much further than accounting for the baby being able to see or hear.

There might be a way to put together mimicry to form something indistinguishable from understanding.
