Given the data we have, it's likely that universal mask wearing would have been enough to contain Covid. But because of the messaging coming from the top, many people aren't wearing masks and instead hope for a Deus ex Machina -- magical cure, near term vaccine...

Resistance to wearing masks looks like straight up racism sometimes — a concession that asian people were right the whole time. People come up with the most ridiculous reasons to justify it e.g. not that many people dying at the moment, constitutional rights etc

This is about reducing the transmission rate in the dynamics of a population. There is a threshold of the transmission rate between a regime where it spreads exponentially and a regime where it dies down. Similar to percolation theory.
