I'm sad to see there is pushback against ML engineers and researchers being more aware of the ethical implications of their work. If your work has an impact, that impact has a moral direction. Technology without ethics amounts to more efficient, more scalable wrongdoing...

This is so true. Unfortunately, there's really no way to produce good, world-changing-for-the-good software without thinking really hard about the ethical implications of our assumptions. This is amplified when building ML solutions. Ethics is not a choice. It's a must.

This is soooo important to understand. ML Engineers are building things that directly impact untold numbers of people. It’s their responsibility to do it in an ethical manner

As long as keeping up with the ethics brings money, then we should be all good

Yep ethics shld be part of the curriculum. AI engineers will have significant impact on society so they should be held to the same ethical standards as civil engineers for example. However some of the pushback might be directed at cult-like ideologies rather than ethics.

And yet, fields like genetic engineering and medical research have incorporated notions of ethics without it being a controversial topic. What makes ML so special? It's about not causing harm to others. How is not wanting to do harm 'walking a dangerous line'?

Its the nature of ML as it stands its based on existing data in most cases. Existing data can never adequately describe the present. There is always the process of invention that ML does not do very well. This is why there is push back since its sold as replacement for invention
