The thing about art is this -- the human mind believes everything to be isomorphic to everything else, hence even abstract patterns evoke emotion. You can't connect three points without conjuring up memories of past experiences.

Acoustic dissonance is sad. A major triad is euphoric. Combine the two and it's nostalgic. An abstract cluster of lines is aggressive. The combination of two specific colors is peaceful.

But which of these associations are inherent, or maybe emergent, and which learned? Which ones are universal and which cultural? There may be insight hiding there about the underlying mechanisms.
