Facebook is the viral disinformation equivalent of a packed indoor concert venue where no one is wearing a mask. Some things just inherently pose a threat to public welfare. Covid wrecks our health and our economy, Facebook wrecks our minds and our democracy.

I agree, but isn't that somewhat true for all mass communication social networks?

I'm using Twitter to receive information about topics that I really care about (Ageing and AI), so I think that it can be a helpful tool. I agree with what you said then, you will be the one who will decide what goes on your feed. Peace!

Through the years, I have reported countless (hundreds?) abusive accounts on Facebook, ranging from blatant nazi content to financial scam. Only one of them has ever been acknowledged. It's more than discouraging and frankly, I think I'm done with it.

I’ll add that it’s not as though people were taught how to process so much information. The Internet pre-Facebook had a certain barrier to entry that protected people from misinformation and hyperbole. Facebook destroyed that barrier.

I think we’re in a situation where even without Facebook, the UX breakthrough can’t be forgotten. It could be regulated away. We could choose to send people back to the dark ages. It just seems wrong to do.

The classical liberal response to this dilemma is always more education. It’s just a brutal slope. Education clicks forward so brutally slowly because beliefs are sticky and attention is limited. The authoritarian response is to participate in the misinformation.
