Note: free speech and hate speech aren't best buddies. They're mortal enemies. If you want to foster an environment where people freely express dissent & unconventional views, as a precondition you need to make people feel safe. Especially people who aren't part of the majority

You can dissent all you want on ideas, but you can't paint a target on the back of a protected group. Note: 1. "Protected group" -- not some random group. E.g. "Italians", but not "Tesla owners". 2. A group, not individuals. Individuals are protected by a different set of laws.

As a side note, I've never seen hate speech that had any intellectual value -- so you're not "weakening the public debate" by refusing to tolerate it. You're actually strengthening freedom of expression, by making *everyone* feel safe when expressing dissenting ideas.

And who determines which groups shall be protected? How to tell apart a critique vs "depicting it as inferior, undesirable, etc..."? It's all still subjected to the CENSOR's interpretation, and I hope one day you'll empirically verify this fact by being a victim of it yourself.

What if one observes that certain groups are less represented in certain industries, and would like to inquire as to whether the reason is biological or otherwise. Could one navigate this discussion without it being interpreted as hate speech?

Why would "a protected group" be part of the definition? That part does not make sense to me. Hate speech should be defined in terms of any human being. Even though people from protected groups are victims of hate speech many times more often than privileged people.

I think a proper definition is actually a complicated problem that we shouldn't underestimate. For example, saying "I don't know whether people from country X are less intelligent than the rest of the world, but it could be." Shouldn't be allowed imo and yet doesn't fit the def.
