It never ceases to amaze me how much correlation there seems to be between views as disparate as "vaccines are dangerous", "HCQ is effective against COVID", "wearing a mask is useless", and "news cases are caused by recent 'riots'". What could the latent variable be?
It's a contest between "I always believe the opposite of what evidence indicates" and "I take all my opinions from the guy who opportunistically lies about everything all the time"
It's actually,"Since childhood I have created a model for the world and I have chosen a person to represent that model. I have to stick up for the guy, or the whole model of my world falls apart."
Such people don't believe the opposite of what evidence indicates if the evidence is in front of them. Like if their dishwasher is broken they'll make the correct conclusion. They believe the opposite of what authority figures say. (Which is sometimes a good strategy.)
These two options are strongly correlated.
i think it's neither. it's just what is the tribe one aligns with. you would find similar cohesion on the liberal/left side i'd guess.
Simple clear messages are more easily digested than those that are balanced, nuanced, possibly incomplete
It's not the guy who opportunistically lies about everything all the time. It's group identity, a much stronger force than personal charisma. The problem isn't going to go away when Trump goes away. Someone better at harnessing group identity may come after Biden.
This is a prime example of the downside of human generalisation...
