It never ceases to amaze me how much correlation there seems to be between views as disparate as "vaccines are dangerous", "HCQ is effective against COVID", "wearing a mask is useless", and "news cases are caused by recent 'riots'". What could the latent variable be?

It’s the same latent variable that drives the correlation between religiosity and pro-gun stances: tribalism. Once you’re in a “tribe” (e.g., liberal, conservative) you’re likely to adopt its dominant views. And they’re usually polar opposite to views held by the “rival” tribe.
