If there's one take-away of the past few years -- it's that it's a practical and moral imperative to invest as much as we can in education. Education is the precondition for civilization.

Increase education, and you'll get to the next degree of civilization in 1-2 generations. Cut education, and you'll be going backwards. The cost is steep

Few ideas have done as much damage as the notion that education is merely about the acquisition of marketable skills. Education is the vehicle through which civilization propagates itself through time, from one generation to the next.

As someone who loves school and agrees with 99% of what you say, on the surface, I agree... but why? What's the argument? Many of my self-taught peers who skipped college are well-off, smart, and insightful, while others who are highly educated could've fooled me. So what gives?

Classroom education can be awfully abstract. Seems to me like the culture of those around us makes a bigger difference in how we think and act.

Yes but the literature is clear that there is an unclear relationship between funding and education quality. Investing in education may be best done by reforming the system

Exactly, the most pragmatic way of achieving what François says is to fix the fundamental design flaws and bureacratic waste of the current education system.

"Education" is too broad a term. Brainwashing is a form of education. I'd say it's crucial to have good teachers who can teach critical thinking skills. Some get this without formal education, others are deluded that critical thought is same as rejecting experts/science/MSM/etc.
