I think we really overlook the psychological impact of online abuse and online displays of bigotry. It can alter career choices and life choices, and cause depression. It's one of the many reasons why social media must do more to fight against it.

online world is weird. It's difficult to find the right tone and identify the relationships between people online. Can I refer to 'you' directly in a comment or is it sign of over familiarity? Where are the boundaries? All of us engage with strangers online without introduction.

Or even worse, one side thinks they engage with an acquaintance (or a friend), but the other thinks you are a (most likely rude) stranger.

Fair enough but shouldn’t the reverse be true as well? What’s acceptable in person should be acceptable online. Unfortunately, social media seems to be increasingly pandering to mob sentiments and censoring wrong-think - which includes many controversial but not hateful ideas.
