I think we really overlook the psychological impact of online abuse and online displays of bigotry. It can alter career choices and life choices, and cause depression. It's one of the many reasons why social media must do more to fight against it.

The "online stuff is not for real, only the real world matters" mindset may have made sense in the early 2000s, but not today. Online is part of the real world -- today, it's one of its primary components. What's not acceptable in person is not acceptable online.

They make perhaps 2 billion from having Trump on the platform. Too strong financial incentive to keep bigotry.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-08-17/what-is-trump-worth-to-twitter-one-analyst-estimates-2-billion …

I think it's complicated to use this kind of utilitarian reasoning. Opinions like "Research in CS is only for very smart people" (which I totally disagree with) are highly discouraging, can cause a lot of harm and alter career choices, and yet I don't see them as hate speech.

I think they should be argued against, and we should give people tools and information so they don't get stuck in communities where only such beliefs are presented. I don't think all positions that can cause harm are unacceptable. Racism and misogyny are different beasts imo.

having witnessed this myself and observing others of my generation cling to cancel culture, it makes sense. a trendy place like twitter scales social dysphoria, as it can scale social cohesion too. symmetry is important; though should the medium itself support or prevent?

in general, people (except for some sociapats) are not ready psychologically for such a large range and speed of interactions. Our herd instincts evolved in different settings for ages. Now, given changes in < 40 years, the instincts are not trained properly for this setting

I think metrics for social media success are needed to be redefined. Their reward function is psychologically triggering the social life in a downward spiral. I don't have high hopes from the existing social media companies, as it's too late for them to cure this problem.

Accounts should be legally tied to real identities. Imho this whole "pseudo anonymous avatar" culture, whilst cool for teens in the 2000s, is what ruins social interactions the most. For people in oppressed environments, well, the story is different - but let's not use it as 1/3

a justification because there are better ways thank twitter or facebook to communicate (eg. TOR, VPNs, etc) if you aren't allowed to (eg. signal, tox), to express your opinions in the clear or in the deep/dark web, to rise awareness on certain topics (eg. by writing an 2/3
