If you're disgusted by the casual racism & misogyny that in endemic on the ML subreddit, let me tell you: this is NOT representative of the ML community. The ML community is in no way perfect. But in its majority it's made of good people. Don't get discouraged by what you may see on Reddit - this would be like judging the food of a restaurant by sampling its garbage cans. For what it's worth, no researcher I know posts on Reddit.
I am proud to be a part of the ML Community and all the members I have met ranging from students, teachers, enthusiasts, researcher, content creator, everybody has been so humble and patient. Well said words @fchollet
Majority is good, but the sexism and racism is rampant from grad school and onwards. And it ranges from micro to macro aggressions but it’s there. Awareness is key.
I work mostly adjacent to ML research teams but know enough to be able to see that 90% of the posters there don't have the first clue about machine learning. A lot of the CS-based subreddits are the same.
